Miley Cyrus’ new music video, “Mother’s Daughter,” might make you cry.  It couldn’t have come out at a more fitting time, considering what is going on around us. The song is all about personal freedom and features trans icon Aaron Philip, Amazon Ashley, Vendela, Trydryn Scott, LGBTQ+ skater Lacey Baker, activist Melanie Sierra and her nursing infant, activist Casil McArthur, curvy goddess Angelina Duplisea, Paige Fralix, and even Miley’s mom and fashion icon, Tish Cyrus.

Even cooler, Miley featured each of the people who were in her music video on her Instagram page, with a story about their personal journeys with empowerment.

“Hallelujah, I’m a freak
I’m a freak, hallelujah…

My mama always told me that I’d make it
That I’d make it, so I made it
I put my back into and my heart in it
So I did it, yeah, I did it
My mamma always told me that I’d make it
That I’d make it, so I made it
I put my back into and my heart in it
So I did it, yeah, I did it

Don’t f*ck with my freedom
I came back to get me some
I’m nasty, I’m evil
Must be something in the water or that I’m my mother’s daughter…”— Excerpt from “Mother’s Daughter,”  lyrics by Miley Cyrus, Andrew Wyatt, and Alma

There’s something about Miley’s voice in this song—maybe it’s the chorus, maybe it’s just everything—but it really gets you in the gut, or your heart, or somewhere that resonates deeply. While the video itself almost is like a red-tinted Marilyn Manson video, the overall message is clearly empowerment, whether that is feminine empowerment or sexual empowerment.
