A trailer for the new Julia Louis-Dreyfus film, You Hurt My Feelings, was released on March 21.

It is a general rule in our society that honesty is the best policy. However, honesty does not always make everyone happy. That is the concept for the new film. In You Hurt My Feelings, Louis-Dreyfus stars as Beth, an author whose latest book was unsuccessful. Her husband is Don (Tobias Menzies), a therapist who always supports her work, with whom she has a son, Elliott (Owen Teague). However, one day, Beth overhears Don saying he is not a big fan of her writing which makes Beth re-evaluate everything she knows about her marriage, writing, and self-esteem.

The trailer unveils Don and Beth’s unhappy relationship and the hardships they face. While the trailer does not reveal what Don says that makes Beth so upset, her visceral reaction gives an idea of the pain. Furthermore, the movie will follow Beth’s strenuous relationship with her mother, Georgie (Jeannie Berlin). Also, the film follows Beth’s sister Sarah (Michaela Watkins), and how she deals with her marriage to a struggling actor, Mark (Arian Moayed). Additional cast members include David Cross, Amber Tamblyn, Sarah Steele, and Zach Cherry. It is a film about love and the truth.

This film is by writer/director Nicole Holofcener. One of her first films, Lovely and Amazing, won an Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actress as well as received five other nominations. She previously worked with Louis-Dreyfus in the rom-com Enough Said. Holofcener snagged her first Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay for writing the 2018 biopic Can You Ever Forgive Me? Her most recent film was The Last Duel, directed by Ridley Scott. She wrote this film alongside Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. Holofcener has had a lot of success in the industry, which shows promise for You Hurt My Feelings.

It is rare to see Louis-Dreyfus acting in film. Most of her work is in television, specifically her roles in SeinfeldVeep, and The New Adventures of Old Christine. These roles have helped her reach the record for most Emmy wins by an actor. Despite those many television appearances, Louis-Dreyfus has quite a few film credits to her name. There is the aforementioned Enough Said. In 2020, she starred alongside Will Ferrell in the comedy Downhill. Furthermore, earlier this year, Louis-Dreyfus was in the rom-com You People on Netflix. Louis-Dreyfus has found her film niche in fun comedies.

Most of Menzies’s work has been in British media. Like Louis-Dreyfus, he is more of a television actor. One of his first big roles was as Brutus in the historical television series Rome. He is mostly known for his role as Prince Phillip in seasons 3 and 4 of The Crown, which led to his Emmy win. Also, he has a Golden Globe nomination for his role in Outlander. While he has not done a lot of big work in film, he has proven that he can give a starring performance.

The original announcement for this film was in late 2021. This was when the popular production company A24 picked up this film to produce. Louis-Dreyfus was in this project from the beginning, and more casting came later. Filming began in New York City in May 2022. The film’s original premiere was at the Sundance Film festival in January, and it impressed many audiences at the festival. It comes to theaters on May 26, and the talent of this film should make audiences smile the whole time.
