Interview with Alli Simpson + Jack and Jack and Madison Beer
Recently, we were on set with the lovely and talented Alli Simpson for the making of her new music video, “Roll Em Up.” The video was shot right outside of Los Angeles at this adorable retro looking diner. The diner was very kitchy, painted pink and blue with a ‘50’s vibe. We then caught up with Alli in hair & makeup right before the shooting of video, where we dished about the making of the video, working with Jack & Jack, her modeling career and even chat about her dating life. We didn’t stop there! We went on to interview Madison Beer, who makes a cameo in “Roll Em Up,” and Jack Johnson of the duo Jack & Jack to see when the duo’s next EP drops. We loved talking to Alli, Madison, and Jack Johnson and hope you love them as much as we do!
GLITTER: So what’s going on? How are you doing today?
ALLI: I’m doing so good. I’m so happy right now.
GLITTER: Awesome. What are we shooting today?
ALLI: Today, I’m shooting my music video for “Roll Em Up” with Jack & Jack. We’re at this really cool diner. I’m excited for everyone to hear the song, and for the music video to come out.
GLITTER: What’s the vibe of this video?
ALLI: The song is like old school mixed with a new school vibe. I think that’s where we’re going with the video, very Grease like.
GLITTER: Yeah, it feels like there’s this ‘50’s styled mixed with an ‘80s flare.
ALLI: Yeah
GLITTER: It’s Cool.
ALLI: Yeah, thank you.
GLITTER: How did you come up with the concept for the song?
ALLI: With the help of a few others the idea just kind of came together. We listened to the song over and over again. We were visualizing how it felt. It just had that feeling to it and we just knew where it should go.
GLITTER: Have you been friends with Jack & Jack for a while?
ALLI: I have. I’m doing some clothing campaigns with Jack & Jack for Mudd. So I’ve known them for a while, probably a year. So I had this song and I needed a boy feature. I showed it to them and they were so down to record it. It was pretty organic, and I’m pretty excited about it too.
GLITTER: Next year you’re going to be an adult. What are you planning to do for your 18th?
ALLI: Oh My Gosh! I have no idea. It’s a little while from now. My birthday is in April. I’ll probably go make to Australia.
GLITTER: Where in Australia are you from?
ALLI: The Gold Coast.
GLITTER: How do you like being here? You’ve been here for three years now.
ALLI: Almost five years, but it definitely only feels like two. It’s gone super quickly. I’ve had the opportunity to do some big things. So, it’s sort of crazy living in this surreal world right now.
GLITTER: Meeting a lot of celebrities like Gigi?
ALLI: Yes, she’s still a lovely friend of ours.
GLITTER: How do you describe your personal style?
ALLI: I love accessories. I’m wearing a ring on every finger. I’m super into something that I’m comfortable in. In fashion people try to follow trends, but with me I’m going to dress like how I’m comfortable. I’m super into like vintage tees, cool jackets and vintage shopping. I love finding rare pieces, and making them my own.
GLITTER: I’m seeing a lot of leather jackets in the wardrobe over there.
ALLI: The majority of them are mine.
GLITTER: [Laughs] How many wardrobe changes do you have in this video?
ALLI: Just two, daytime and nighttime.
GLITTER: Nice! So is it a nighttime party?
ALLI: A little bit. The nighttime is a little freakier than daytime.
GLITTER: Are you seeing anyone or dating right now?
ALLI: Right now no. I’m looking to use that excuse; I’m focusing in on my career.
GLITTER: [laughs] That’s always a good excuse.
ALLI: I mean there is always time for boys.
GLITTER: Anything else you want to tell us?
ALLI: Something interesting about the song is that Cody (her brother) wrote it with Selena (Selena Gomez).
GLITTER: He didn’t want to use it for himself?
ALLI: Cody & Selena actually recorded the song, but Cody decided to go a different way with his music, and Selena was taking a little bit of a break. They were doing nothing with it. I was looking for a new song. I was messing around with a few different things. I was like to Cody “ are you going to do anything with “Roll Em Up?”
GLITTER: So you are hearing their music before most of us are?
ALLI: Yeah, I was listening to “Roll Em Up” for like a year.
GLITTER: Wow!
ALLI: Yeah, the song has been around for a long time. I was listening to Cody & Selena’s version everyday. So, I was like to Cody “ Are you going to do anything with this” and he said, “No, you can have it.” Then I got Jack & Jack to be on it, and that’s that.
GLITTER: With that being said; do you ever feel any competition with your bother?
ALLI: Most definitely not. If anything it’s the complete opposite. We are each other’s biggest fans. He helps me with all of my music, and I’m there to help him with his stuff too.
GLITTER: What do you want to focus on mostly? Is it the music, the modeling, the radio show?
ALLI: I’m doing a bit of everything. I don’t want to focus on anything in particular now. I don’t want to put myself into a box and just be one thing right now – especially because I’m having so many opportunities. I’m really young. So whichever one I love as I get older I’ll fall into.
GLITTER: That sounds like a good idea. So, I’m in a room with a bunch of other people while you get your hair done. Who are this other kids?
ALLI: Dancers, Friends, hair, makeup, directors, producers. Mom!
GLITTER: Oh Mom! [laughs]
ALLI: Mom’s in here (Mom shies away)
GLITTER: Have you seen this, your bother on the cover of Glitter (I pull out a copy of Glitter Magazine).
ALLI: He’s so young! Look (talking to her mom)! He looks like a little boy.
Alli’s PR: Now, we need a cover of Alli.
Madison Beer Interview:
ALLI: Hey, Madison that jacket looks good.
MADISON: Thanks I love it! (She’s wearing a leather jacket)
GLITTER: So what’s going on? What are you doing today?
MADISON: I’m making a cameo in Alli Simpson’s Video. I’m very excited! It’s going to be really good.
GLITTER: What are you doing these days?
MADISON: I’m working on my music a lot. I’m going to release my new song. It’s going to come out in the next 2-3 week. So like super, super soon. Yeah it’s really, really exciting.
GLITTER: What’s your song?
MADISON: It’s called “All for Love.”
GLITTER: All for love… What are you going to do for love?
MADISON: You’ll see in the video. It’s going to be an awesome thing.
GLITTER: Do you and Alli know each before this shoot.
MADISON: Yeah, Alli and I have know each other for about 3 years now.
ALLI: Yeah it’s been a while.
MADISON: When I first moved back to LA she was one of my first friends
GLITTER: Do you two hangout; go shopping? What’s your favorite thing to do together?
MADISON: We used to skateboard together all around her neighborhood. And I want to go to Australia.
GLITTER: Yeah you two should totally go together. You could go surfing together. Do you know how to surf.
MADISON: No.
ALLI: Not really.
GLITTER: Where are you originally from?
MADISON: From New York.
GLITTER: So, you’re not a beach girl?
MADISON: Not really. I used to go to the beach a lot but the waves are so big I thought I was going to die. Alli is going to teach me the ropes on how to deal with waves and stuff.
GLITTER: What are you most excited about?
MADISON: I have a collab with Justin. We recorded a ton of stuff but nothing is out yet.
GLITTER: Justin who?
MADISON: Justin Bieber.
[Everyone Laughs]
GLITTER: I just wanted you to say the name. Can you tell us what that song is going to be or named.
MADISON: I don’t know. There are so many and we don’t know which one is going to be released, but definitely a collab with him is coming.
GLITTER: What is the vibe on these songs.
MADISON: So it’s like Trappy, R&B. It’s really awesome.
GLITTER: Can you tell us what your personal style is?
MADISON: It changes everyday. One day I could wear all back and biker boots, and the next day I could wear a flower dress. I’m all over the place.
GLITTER: You’re like a chameleon.
MADISON: Yes, I’m like a chameleon.
GLITTER: I see you have a henna tattoo.
MADISON: I do. It’s cute.
Jack & Jack
GLITTER: Hey guys what’s up?
JACK JOHNSON: We’ve been kinda chillin waiting for the shot, but that’s how that is. Hey, it’s gonna be a dope day, a dope shoot.
GLITTER: So what else are you guys up to?
JACK JOHNSON: We have a new EP coming out at the new of this month. We are going overseas, Europe in late October, early November for about a month.
J&J: Yeah, we’ve never really been overseas. We’ve only played one show in London & one show in Mexico but it was a private show.
GLITTER: Can you tell about some of the songs you have out?
JACK JOHNSON: Currently out, we have a track called “Like That.” That’s our song that’s really getting buzz right now. It’s been on the Hip-hop charts ever since we put it out. It’s been really cool seeing it sustain. And not have that big raise on the charts and big fall on the charts. We are happy to have a song that keeps selling on a day-to-day basis. We also have this track called “Wild Life” that’s been our most successful track so far. That video has gotten over 10 million views on YouTube.
GLITTER: Wow, that’s huge.
JACK JOHNSON: We are releasing 4 tracks on this new EP coming out. It’s called Calibraska. We are both from Nebraska, and we moved to California. This EP is paying homage to that. The cover art is us cheers’ing corn on the cob in this street lined with palm trees while wearing overalls. The first track on there is called “California.” The hook is like “I’m just a Midwest dream in California.”
We kind of started on social media, Vine. We had this one specific Vine where we dress up as these nerd characters and we vandalize a car. That was the Vine that really started everything for us. So, in the video we are these characters again called Eric & Winston. It’s our first time in California as these characters. So, in this video we are really paying homage to how we have come up on Vine. It’s also showing the contrast between Nebraska and California.
GLITTER: So you can make it just from a Vine? Do you recommend kids making videos and showing their personalities on Vine?
JACK JOHNSON: Yes, if you think you are a captivating person in anyway, shape or form. I think definitely go for it. Definitely, chase that dream in the back of your head, you never know. It could become a reality. It’s crazy because we never expected this to happen, but it did. I think that’s the case with most people. It just kind of happens.
