The Dark Realities Of A Fictional Show
Since its release, Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale has been gaining quite the popularity for the past several weeks.
Starring Elisabeth Moss, Yvonne Strahovski, and Alexis Bledel, the show is set in a totalitarian society called the Gilead. The United States is no longer the United States, and women are completely robbed of their freedom. Because the birth rate has also been plummeting, a group of women are forced into working as servants for their husbands. They are only needed for their fertility, and serve no other purpose.
Sounds pretty scary, right? What’s even scarier is that many critics are saying that the show is foreshadowing what could very possibly happen in the near future for America. There have even been signs in women’s marches that reference the story as well as the original novel written by Margaret Atwood. It’s daunting to think that something like the Gilead could actually take place, but the show most prominently acts as an educated warning to many of us—that we aren’t that far off from what’s depicted.
Make sure to watch The Handmaid’s Tale on Hulu, it’s only on its sixth episode so you don’t have to play catch up for long!
