Woman to Salute this Memorial Day

memorial day

History is often times seen as his story and tends to not acknowledge women’s efforts as much as mens.

Many incredible women’s stories are not included in history books, but here are just a few that deserve our appreciation and honor.

Jacqueline Cochran was extremely talented in flying and received multiple world records; however, was denied entry into the US Air Force. She was not accepted until 1941 where she became the first woman to fly a bomber across the North Atlantic. In 1943, she became the director of the Women Air Force Service Pilots and trained numerous female pilots.

Cathay Williams was a very determined and strong woman who wouldn’t let the fact that women were not allowed to enlist in the U.S. army in 1866 stop her. She was the first black woman to enlist and the only black woman to serve in the 19th century. Cathay switched her name to William Cathay and dressed as a man to be allowed to enlist.

Both Frances Wills and Harriet Pickens received an immense amount of challenges when they enlisted into the Navy in 1944. They were the first two black women officers in the US Navy. They lead WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) and trained new recruits.

Enjoy your Memorial Day and take time to reflect on the incredible men and women that risk their lives for our freedom!
