Wonder Woman Is Awesome, So How Is There Still Controversy?
D.C. Comics’ Wonder Woman opened June 2. You can already predict that it will perform pretty well at the box office just by looking at critics’ rave reviews as well as Rotten Tomato’s stellar score of 94%.
But that doesn’t mean there isn’t controversy. After recent buzz that there should be women-only Wonder Woman screenings in Austin, Texas, it drew plenty of negative reactions as well as a less than favorable male-written letter. According to EW, the man threatened to “boycott Austin.”
Austin mayor Steve Adler, however, responded back with a fiery letter of his own.
“I am writing to alert you that your email account has been hacked by an unfortunate and unusually hostile individual. Please remedy your account’s security right away, lest this person’s uniformed and sexist rantings give you a bad name…,” Adler wrote.
His letter continues in this manner, and the complete letter can be read on his official website.
Even Alamo Drafthouse, the cinema chain responsible for hosting these women-only screenings, believes that it has the right to host such events, as it was a way to “celebrate a character who has meant a great deal to women for close to eight decades,” as stated in a comment on the venue’s Facebook page.
It seems that even Wonder Woman, an icon and inspiration for feminist ideals, can’t get a break from sexist-fueled controversy.
