Selena Gomez’s LGBTQ+ Pride Billboard Letter
June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month and Selena Gomez is showing her support!
Selena Gomez uses her fame and large fan base to bring important issues to light! On June 1st, she wrote a ‘love letter’ to the LGBTQ community. Billboard asked numerous celebrities to show their support through writing letters.
Selena shared a story about when she was younger and going to brunch with her mom and her mom’s friends, who were all gay. From her letter, we can tell she really enjoyed these outings! She explains that “I had no idea they were all gay as I didn’t even comprehend what that meant at the time” yet all she knew was that she loved “being surrounded by these kind, fun, and loving friends.”
She tells another story about her 16th birthday, where her mother surprised her with a beautiful drag queen who sang her favorite song. Selena mentions how grateful she is that her mom brought her up in such an open-minded and non-judgmental environment.
Although the pop superstar is proud of the accomplishments of the gay rights movement and how far LGBTQ rights have come in her lifetime, Selena states “there is still a significant amount of work to do and I look forward to the day when a person is never judged, discriminated, or feared for their sexuality.”
