Selena Gomez Shares Her Thoughts On ’13 Reasons Why’ Controversy

Selena Gomez recently shared her thoughts on the controversy that has been swirling since the March release of 13 Reasons Why.

The show has opened critical discussions about whether suicide had been glamorized as a revenge fantasy of sorts, and if the depiction of Hannah Baker’s suicide was pertinent to the ending. While these are just some aspects of the controversy, Gomez commented on images and events she thought were crucially needed in the show.

During her interview on the Elvis Duran and the Morning Show, she discussed some of the show’s graphic content:

“This is happening every day. Whether or not you wanted to see it, that’s what’s happening. The content is complicated. It’s dark and it has moments that are honestly very hard to swallow, and I understood that we’re doing something that is difficult. But these kids today are so exposed to things that I would never comprehend when I was 8.That stuff is uncomfortable for people to talk about, but it is happening and hopefully, it opened the door for people to actually accept what’s happening and actually go and change it, talk about it.”

As an executive producer for the hit show, it must be difficult for the star to depict  important imagery with such a highly controversial subject. However, in the upcoming season, Gomez said she plans to delve deeper into the consequences of Hannah’s decision.
