Such a strong ad!

Nike is celebrating Pride Month by featuring transgender athlete and vogue artist Leiomy Maldonado in its new video campaign for the #BeTrue collection. The video send a powerful message about self acceptance while also promoting athletic empowerment.

The video depicts the beautiful art of voguing, a dance move originally performed and created by queer and transgender people of color in 1960s Harlem. The video shows Maldonado training other dancers. As the performers dance through the city streets, the audience hears a dramatic voice asking questions like “What did you do to make a mark on the world?” “What mountains did you climb?” “Which angels gave you their wings?”

Laverne Cox showed her support for the ad through reposting it on her Instagram with the caption: “There’s so much to post and share this week, the girls are doing big things, trans folks are stepping forward with talent, vision, and determination and I love you all!”

This is just Nike’s second commercial to feature a transgender athlete. The first was of Chris Mosier, the first transgender man to earn a spot on the U.S. men’s national team.

Nike is moving towards a more inclusive community and wants to show its acceptance of all people! The company has also released #Equality campaigns featuring female athletes in hijabs.
