Women are Speaking Out on Widespread Sexual Assault
Ever since the news broke of Harvey Weinstein’s actions, men and women across multiple social media platforms are commenting “me too” to show just how common sexual harassment and assault really are.
More than 30 women in Hollywood have spoken out on their sexual assault allegation against the former producer. Since then, women are speaking out on their experiences of sexual assault, whether it be their own, or something that they have witnessed. As mentioned above, many are marking their posts and tweets either with the hashtag #metoo, or simply writing the words “me too.”
The original post states as such: “If all the women who have been sexually harassed or assaulted wrote ‘Me too’ as a status, we might give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem.”
The post picked up traction when Alyssa Milano, a close friend to Rose McGowan, one of Weinstein’s many victims, urged women to speak up and spread awareness on the issue.
In a matter of hours, the post was widespread over multiple social media platforms, even celebrities taking part in sharing their tweets, sharing in the magnitude of sexual assault. Many women urged men to participate in and learn from the hashtag as well, claiming that sexual assault can happen to anyone, not just women, and it’s just as widespread. Two simple words carrying so much meaning.
