Tessa Thompson Will Play Marvel’s First LGBTQ Superhero

When it comes to Tessa Thompson, she can almost literally do no wrong.

So it’s really no surprise to anyone that she got the highly sought after role of Valkyrie in the new “Thor: Ragnorak” in theaters this coming November. Thompson, who is best known for her roles in Creed, Westworld, and Dear White People, the movie. The34-year-old actress and musician has taken her role to a whole new level.

In a recent tweet, Thompson stated about her character, “She’s bi. And yes, she cares very little about what men think of her. What a joy to play!” This is every person’s dream in a strong female lead.

She later released another tweet clarifying whether or not she meant she was talking about the comic book depiction or how she had portrayed the character in the movie. She then wrote, “YES! Val is Bi in the comics & I was faithful to that in her depiction. But her sexuality isn’t explicitly addressed in Thor: Ragnorak.”

It has also been released that initially, the role of Valkyrie was bisexual in the comic books, but, on top of not being addressed in Ragnorak, it wasn’t going to be honored. Tessa went out of her way to make sure that Valkyrie’s character was properly portrayed, thus making her the first explicitly confirmed LGBTQ character in a Marvel Universe movie.

Another step forward for equality!
