Helen Mirren’s Latest Thriller is Based on Real Events

Anyone up for a trip to the Winchester House?Helen Mirren is playing the role of Sarah Winchester in her latest film Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built. The movie follows Mirren’s character, a widow and heiress to a firearms business who is haunted by those whose death was caused by a gun. To keep the spirits from getting her, Winchester builds this grand house in attempts to confuse the dead. Psychiatrist Eric Price (played by Jason Clarke) is sent to evaluate Ms. Winchester, but realizes that she may not be as crazy as many thinks she is.

The scary part? The story of Ms. Winchester is entirely true. The Winchester house sits in San Jose, California, where thousands of visitors come to witness the bizarre and eerie creation of the widow. Winchester continued building onto the house up to the day of her death.

From stairways that lead nowhere, to doors stories above opening to the outside with no stairs for one to go down, the house is just as much of a mystery as the ghosts themselves are. Many stay clear of the third floor corridor especially after night fall, as people have mentioned hearing footsteps when no one else is around along with their names being whispered by dismembered voices.
