Kendrick Lamar Says There Needs to Be Respect for Older Artist
He believes the people who paved the way for rap should always be respected.
Kendrick Lamar recently appeared in Forbes 30 Under 30 issue and he expressed a lot of opinions about the current state of hip-hop.One that stood out the most was his attitude towards the new category of “mumble rap.”
Mumble rap has been essentially dominated by artists under the age of twenty-five and for some older rappers, they have not enjoyed their art. However, Lamar enjoys the different routes in hip-hop, but he does acknowledge the need for better respect for older artists.
“Don’t go on your interviews and dis them and say you don’t like them and you don’t care for them. That’s your opinion, that’s cool but you have to respect them.” Lamar stated.
In recent occasions, younger artists like Lil Yachty and others have essentially discredited older rappers. Lamar is not for this way of going about one’s career and believes respect should always be given to the ones who paved the way for them. According to Lamar, as long as you are true to yourself and still showing gratitude to your elders you will always evolve.
