Time’s Person of the Year is Unveiled
Congratulations to “The Silence Breakers.”
Time Magazine has finally unveiled their Person of the Year. This year, the legendary cover is given to “The Silence Breakers.” It consists of high profile victims and organizers who have spoken out on sexual harassment and assault. On the cover, you can see Tarana Burke, the founder of #MeToo, Taylor Swift, Ashley Judd, Rose McGowen and more.
Ashley Judd is an actress who spoke out against her abuser, Harvey Weinstein, the minute the abuse happened. She says, “Literally, I exited that hotel room at the Peninsula Hotel in 1997 and came straight downstairs to the lobby, where my dad was waiting for me, because he happened to be in Los Angeles from Kentucky, visiting me on the set and he could tell by my face—to use his words—that something devastating had happened to me. I told him. I told everyone.”
Taylor Swift spoke out against DJ David Mueller earlier this year. During a meet and greet, he had reached under her skirt and grabbed her butt. After sharing her story, he was consequently fired from his job and sued her for millions of dollars. Taylor countersued in pursuit of a symbolic $1 and won.
Tarana Burke started the #MeToo movement. It encouraged people to share their stories on social media using the hashtag to let people know that they are not alone.
