‘Hamilton’ Creator Extends Toys4PuertoRico
Lin-Manuel Miranda has expanded the goal for the toy drive for the children of Puerto Rico.
Many months after the destruction of Hurricane Maria, the island is still left with no power and shortages of food and water. The creator of ‘Hamilton: An American Musical’ in a partnership with Toys R Us has formed a toy drive in an effort to bring toys to the children of Puerto Rico for this holiday season.
In early December, the initial goal set at 10,000 toys was quickly surpassed with the drive now securing over 30,000 toys. Miranda has created a new goal for the drive for over 35,000 toys that he hopes is reached in time for Three Kings’ Day.
Three Kings’ Day is the high point of the Christmas season for Puerto Ricans and a large part of Latin America. The holiday, which takes place on January 6, consists of festivals, parades, feasts, and gift-giving. Miranda, whose family hails from Puerto Rico, visited the island shortly after the hurricane with his family, assisting in the clean-up effort and distributing food and water.
The toys in the drive can be found at prices of $5, $10, and $20 and include toys such as a Rubik’s cube and Disney Princess dolls. They will be distributed by the Hispanic Federation and R. Evolución Latina’s community partners in Puerto Rico.
Some time yesterday we blew past 30,000 toys for 🇵🇷 kids this 3 Kings’ Day and we’re closing in on our goal of 35,000!
