Greta Gerwig Makes History with Best Director Oscar Nomination

The director of Lady Bird is the fifth woman ever to receive a nomination for Best Director.
Gerwig’s successors include Lina Wertmuller in 1977, Jane Campion in 1994, Sofia Coppola in 2004, and Kathryn Bigelow in 2010. Bigelow is the only woman who has won the award, earning it for directing The Hurt Locker.
Laurie Metcalf, who was just got her first #Oscars nomination for Best Supporting Actress, reacts to “Lady Bird” being nominated for Best Picture: “I got really emotional because everybody just poured their whole heart and soul into doing this film” #OscarNoms pic.twitter.com/yN1lpmeRYK

Gerwig’s other nominations include ones from the Critics’ Choice Awards and the Directors Guild Awards. The National Board of Review named her Best Director. Despite these prestigious recognitions, she and several other female directors were snubbed from the Best Director nominations at the Golden Globes. This prompted Natalie Portman to quip “And here are the all-male nominees” at the awards show.
Ron Howard: “We are honored … to be here to present the award for best director.”

However, we still remain hopeful that Gerwig will become the second female director to win an Oscar in her category.
