The Shape of Water sped past all the rest with 13 nominations, having only one nomination less than the Academy’s record for most nominations. Dunkirk received eight nominations, followed by Three Billboard Outside Ebbing, Missouri which received seven. Nine movies in total were nominated for Best Picture, including the three previously mentioned.
Several film nominees are seen as “cultural zeitgeists,” representatives of ongoing social movements. Get Out addresses racism and cultural appropriation. Three Billboards contains commentary on racist policing. Lady Bird made waves for its confident and self-assured female protagonist.
The Academy Awards will take place in the Dolby Theater in Hollywood on March 4. Jimmy Kimmel will host the live event on ABC.
