Alessia Cara received immense backlash after winning Best New Artist and responds perfectly. Some fans do not believe that Alessia Cara is necessarily a “new” artist, but Alessia stated, “I worked very hard for this.”
The 21-year old beat Lil Uzi Vert, Khalid, Julia Michaels, and SZA, making her the only female solo artist to win a Grammy. She posted on Instagram addressing the situation. She stated, “To address the apparent backlash regarding winning something I had no control over: I didn’t log onto grammy.com and submit myself. That’s not how it works. I didn’t ask to be submitted either because there are other artists that deserve the acknowledgment. But I was nominated and won and I am not going to be upset about something I’ve wanted since I was a kid, not to mention have worked really hard for.”
Alessia Cara used her platform of Best New Artist to address the current issues surrounding talent and artistry. She mentioned how people do not have the same opportunities as others and everyone should have the same shot and deserves the same shot.
