Members of Congress Stand in Solidarity with the Time’s Up Movement
In honor of President Donald Trump’s first State of the Union address, members of Congress followed a particular dress code.
Many viewers tuned in for Trump’s first State of the Union Address. Americans watched from many networks such as CBS, NBC, and ABC. Trump’s address focused on many conecpts such as ending “the war on clean coal,” immigration, and even mentioning and taking credit for having the lowest black unemployment rate “ever recorded.”
Like any other major moment met these past few weeks, members of Congress chose to have the State of the Union serve as their grounds for protest. After a group of Democratic women rallied together at Trump’s first address to Congress and decided to wear white attire as a nod to the suffragette movement, a larger group has gathered to make a statement. Rather than the pure white ensembles, many chose to adopt the black looks that were inspired by Hollywood’s “blackout” on the red carpet of the Golden Globes to show their support for the Time’s Up movement.
In a time of sociopolitical discourse surrounding sexism and gender and social inequality in America, these men and women made it clear where they stand on the issues of sexual abuse and harassment in the workplace across industries. Even though it was organized by the Democratic Women’s Working Group, the motion was brought forth to all members of Congress because sexual harassment is not a partisan issue, but a human one.
