Tiffany Haddish Honors Her Late Father on the Oscars Red Carpet
The Girls Trip actress didn’t miss out on the opportunity to reflect on her father.
In a night filled with only the most glamorous gowns of the year (and remember it’s only March), actress Tiffany Haddish took to the red carpet to honor her late father in a statement the first of its kind.
Her 2018 Oscars look carried a special meaning, and it was reminiscent of a conversation with her father who passed away earlier this year. During an interview with Ryan Seacrest, she recounted a tale about her father and sharing the story of how he once told her, “‘One day you’re going to end up at the Oscars and when you go, you have to honor your people.’ So I’m wearing an Eritrean, authentic princess dress. And I’m PROUD of it.”
In her traditional African gown, her nod to her Eritrean heritage was paying homage to her father and her roots. Her tribute comes after the #OscarsSoWhite outburst in 2016, which came as a result of a lack of people of color in its nominations, as well as its program overall.
