Family and Friends Pay Respect to Stephen Hawking
Eddie Redmayne, who portrayed Hawking in the film The Theory of Everything, is one of the many people mourning Hawking’s death.
According to a spokesperson for the family, Hawking “died peacefully at his home in Cambridge in the early hours of this morning. His family have kindly requested that they be given the time and privacy to mourn his passing, but they would like to thank everyone who has been by Professor Hawking’s side and supported him throughout his life.”
In response, Redmayne gave a statement to PEOPLE magazine, stating that “We have lost a truly beautiful mind, an astonishing scientist and the funniest man I have ever had the pleasure to meet. My love and thoughts are with his extraordinary family.”
Felicity Jones, who played Hawking’s first wife Jane in the film, also released a statement, saying she is “So sad to hear of Stephen’s death. Stephen Hawking pushed the boundaries of who we are and what we believe.”
Hawking’s own children said that “We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today. He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years. His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humour inspired people across the world.”
Rest in peace Stephen Hawking.
