Box Office History Made with ‘Black Panther’ and ‘Wrinkle in Time’
History was made as it was the first time that films with black directors held the top two spots in movie theaters.
The films, ‘Black Panther’ and ‘A Wrinkle in Time’, made history this past weekend at the box office. Both Disney movies held the #1 and #2 spots and also had black directors and mega million budgets. Both films have gotten a lot of hype as they are giving us positive messages about diversity. For Disney films, they sure are some evoking and powerful films which is not what most people have said after seeing both.
‘Black Panther’ received much of a following before and after its premiere due to it’s fantastic depiction of Afro-Futurism culture. The film, based around the superhero Black Panther and his backstory, has created a fandom similar to what was seen with the ‘Harry Potter’ film series. After debuting in China, ‘Black Panther’ hit the billion mark. It’s also the fifth Marvels film to join the billion dollar block and the seventh highest grossing domestic release of all time.
‘A Wrinkle in Time’ just debuted a few days ago and has already made it to #2. The film is based off sci-fi fantasy novel by Madeleine L’Engle. The director of this film, Ava DuVernay, is a trailblazer in the world of film as she was the first black woman to direct a Best Picture Oscar nominee, the first black woman to direct a Best Documentary Feature Oscar nominee and several other amazing accomplishments. Technically, since ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ opened at midnight, many have said that it placed at #1 making ‘Black Panther’ #2 when the DuVernay directed film premiered. So it could be said that she also can add being the first black woman to have a #1 box office film even if for a day.
