The students sang a moving rendition of “Seasons of Love” from the musical Rent, a song that often reflects on the importance of lifeThey were originally there to support their drama teacher, Melody Herzfeld, who won an award for excellence in theater education. It is an annual prize at the Tonys that comes with $10, 000 for the school’s drama department.

Herzfeld hid with 65 of her students during the Parkland school shooting. “We all have a common energy. We all want the same thing. We cannot deny it: To be heard, to tell our truth, to make a difference and to be loyally respected. We teach this every day in every arts class,” Herzfeld said in her acceptance speech.

To celebrate Herzfeld’s win, the drama students performed “Seasons of Love.” It is not only a song about life, but just how can a life be measured? They were given a standing ovation at the end of their performance.
