‘The Hate U Give’ Trailer is Here
The trailer for the film adaptation of the best-selling young adult novel The Hate U Give premiered at the BET Awards on Sunday, June 24th.
Written by Angie Thomas, The Hate U Give tells the story of Starr Carter, a black teenage girl leading a double-life at her private high school versus her primarily black neighborhood of Garden Heights–where she witnesses the murder of her childhood friend Khalil by a police officer. The title is derived from the words of Khalil’s favorite rapper Tupac Shakur, as in “The Hate U Give Little Infants F***s Everybody,” the true meaning behind the acronym “THUG LIFE.”
The book was published in 2017 as a felicitous tribute to the many people of color who have lost their lives to police brutality in the US, and a strong nod to the Black Lives Matter movement. The theme of racial injustice in a story written for a teen audience is not only powerful but necessary in the current social climate, and will undoubtedly bring an ugly issue to light for a demographic who is largely affected by it.
Amandla Stenberg portrays Starr alongside a cast of KJ Apa, Sabrina Carpenter, Common, Regina Hall, and Russell Hornsby. Watch The Hate U Give in theaters October 19th to experience this momentous and heartbreaking tale.
