‘Shadowhunters’ Fans Fight to Save the Freeform Show

(Freeform)

Although Freeform’s Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments was canceled, fans aren’t giving up on it yet.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Shadowhunters will end after the second half of season three with a special two-hour finale.

Deadline reported that Karey Burke, EVP, Programming and Development, said during a media luncheon that the decision to end the show was because the Freeform executives  “just couldn’t make the economics work,” despite being “very happy creatively with it.”

Inspired by the social media campaign that led to Brooklyn Nine-Nine being picked up by NBC after its cancelation from Fox, Kat McNamara, who plays Clary Fray on the show, and Shadowhunters fans are blasting Twitter with #SaveShadowHunters and #NotOurLastHunt tweets.

Demonstrating their large number, the ‘Shadowhunters’ have over 100,000 signatures on a Change.org petition to bring the series back, and as a gift” to [the] ShadowFamily,” will also have a banner flown over Netflix Studios in Los Angeles on Friday.

The 3-hour banner display is a move that fans hope will prompt the streaming service to pick up the series.

“Channel[ing] some of [their] passion and frustration to raise awareness” the fans also raised over $12,000 for The Trevor Project with their #SaveShadowHunter fundraiser to “showcase the generosity of the Shadowhunters fandom.”

The fans have chosen to donate to The Trevor Project, a non-profit organization aimed at preventing suicide in the LGBTQ+ community, because of the casting diversity, empowering themes, and “wonderful LGBTQIA+ portrayal,” on Shadowhunters.

While Freeform hasn’t spoken further on their decision, hopefully, the fandom will be rewarded in some way for their efforts.
