The Trailer for Amandla Stenberg’s New Movie ‘The Hate U Give’ Will Give You Chills
20th Century Fox’s The Hate U Give is an adaption of a fiction novel, but the real world scenario is anything but fake.
The unjust treatment and criminal murder of black and brown people in America is almost as American as apple pie and baseball.
Turn on the news, and you’ll likely hear of another black boy taken too soon. Today, it’s 17-year-old Antwon Rose, who died from a gunshot wound inflicted by a police officer.
In reaction to the similar deaths of Oscar Grant, Trayvon Martin, Mike Brown, Tamir Rice, and Sandra Bland, Angie Thomas wrote her New York Times bestseller, The Hate U Give.
Aired during the 2018 BET Awards, the first official trailer for the film adaption of the same name, directed by George Tillman Jr., gave fans a glimpse of the empowering American drama.
The story follows Starr Carter, a black teenage girl, played by Amandla Stenberg, who witnessed her unarmed childhood best friend, Khalil, get shot and killed by a white police officer.
With separate personas in her poor black neighborhood and rich white prep school, Starr must find her voice to stand up for what is right, despite the pressure to remain silent.
The cast is full of familiar faces who star alongside Stenberg’s Starr, including KJ Apa, Sabrina Carpenter, Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby, Issa Rae, Anthony Mackie, Common and Algee Smith.
The Hate U Give opens in theaters on October 19, 2018.
