Shailene Woodley Was Miserable Starving Herself for ‘Adrift’ Role
Shailene Woodley shared how difficult it was to eat only 350 calories a day for her role in Adrift.
Woodley plays Tami Oldham in the true story drama, where she had to somehow survive after her boat is taken down in a hurricane. She not only had to stay alive for herself, but also look after her fiancé that was injured by the storm.
In order to show the state of the situation of her character stranded in the middle of the sea, she was on a really restricted diet. “For the last two weeks I had a can of salmon, some steamed broccoli and two egg yolks every day — 350 calories,” Woodley revealed to The Times.
If it wasn’t clear enough, she added: “It was f***ing miserable.” It was a grueling role for Woodley that affected more than her eating. She also faced restless nights, saying “I can’t sleep when I’m hungry.”
She made quite a commitment for the film, along with her costar Sam Claflin who played her fiancé, Robert. The two bonded over the many challenges while filming, including sea sickness. “It was the best way to kind of get to know someone. When you see someone with sick around their mouth, it’s bizarrely a great opportunity to break the ice,” Claflin shared with People. But it does the film justice that most of the filming was in the actual ocean.
