Nicolette Robinson to Play Leading Lady in ‘Waitress’ on Broadway
Nicolette Robinson is taking the Broadway stage for the first time to play Jenna in Waitress.
Robinson shared the news on Instagram, saying “Be right back, I’m just over the moon….” While the actress has been in roles on screen, like Hart of Dixie and Unforgetable, this will be her Broadway debut. She will be taking over the role from Katherine McPhee. The role was also previously played by songwriter Sara Bareilles, who write the score for the musical.
But the new casting is something of historical for the musical as Robinson is the first person of color that is playing the lead role.
Robinson will play Jenna Hunterson. Jenna lives in a small town with her abusive husband, Earl, and works as a waitress and piemaker. But she has much bigger dreams to get out of the small town by entering a pie contest with a very big prize.
The Broadway newcomer will step in Jenna’s shoes from September 4 to October 28.
