Serena Williams Steps Out of Her Comfort Zone for Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Serena Williams is more than just a wickedly fierce tennis player, she’s also an incredible singer.
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Williams posted a very intimate, and topless, video of herself singing The Divinyls “I Touch Myself.” She’s stepped out of her comfort zone to bring attention to a topic that’s not spoken about enough. In her Instagram post, she wrote, “This Breast Cancer Awareness Month I’ve recorded a version of The Divinyls global hit ‘I Touch Myself’ to remind women to self-check regularly. Yes, this put me out of my comfort zone, but I wanted to do it because it’s an issue that affects all women of all colors, all around the world. Early detection is key – it saves so many lives. I just hope this helps to remind women of that.”
The I Touch Myself Project launched in 2014 in partnership with Berlei, a bra manufacturer, and was inspired by Chrissy Amphlett, who died in 2013 after a long battle with breast cancer and multiple sclerosis.
According to the I Touch Myself Project, 1 in 8 women are diagnosed with breast cancer. Williams expresses the urgency in early detection and the necessity for regular self-examination. It’s inspiring to see Williams using her platform to discuss stigmatic topics like breast cancer.
