It’s #MeanGirlsDay See How Fans are Celebrating This Year
Fans and celebrities alike are celebrating Mean Girls throughout social media this October 3rd through wearing pink and more.
In 2004, Mean Girls was released in theaters. Mean Girls was a high school comedy genre film written by comedian Tina Fey. It featured stars such as Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert, and Amanda Seyfried. The film was about Cady Heron (Lohan) entering high school in the United States for the first time after moving from Africa. Cady later meets the mean girl clique of her high school, The Plastics, and slowly learns about its members Regina George (McAdams), Gretchen Weiners (Chabert), and Karen Smith (Seyfried).
Because of its sardonic humor, wit, and memorable quotes, Mean Girls became a classic popular film throughout the world and gained a cult following of its own in the years after it was released – including an unofficial holiday.
October 3rd was declared ‘Mean Girls Day’ by fans of the film on social media and is named after a scene in the film when high school student Cady was asked by her crush Aaron Samuel, played Jonathan Bennett, in a classroom about what day it was: October 3rd.

Throughout social media fans of the film, including a few celebrities such as Ellen Degeneres and John Stamos, celebrated the film by posting selfies or sharing GIFs and quotes from the film.

The trivia show Jeopardy even featured a prompt about Mean Girls.
A number of Mean Girls fans have also decided to celebrate Mean Girls Day by wearing pink, which is based on a line spoken by Plastics member Karen Smith, “On Wednesdays, we wear pink,” since this year’s Mean Girls Day falls on a Wednesday.
Earlier this year, a Broadway musical production of Mean Girls opened in New York City. To celebrate Mean Girls Day, fans of the Mean Girls Broadway show were offered a chance to see a show for free on October 3rd through entering a lottery.
