Artist Alessia Cara releases new music from her album The Pains of Growing.

The Canadian singer-songwriter sings about the pain of a breakup in her newest song debut, “Not Today.”

Alessia croons:

“Someday I won’t be afraid of my head.
Someday I will not be chained to my bed.
Someday I’ll forget the day he left. But surely not today.”

In a recent interview with Zane Lowe, Alessia expressed the reason behind the lyrics of the song. She said that after having a tough time with a breakup, she wrote a lot of songs including “Not Today.” Alessia explains, “The song to me was like that grieving period in the middle of healing…or the moment or the period of time before you actually get to the healing stage.”

The song is an anthem for anyone going through a tough breakup. It explores the deepest parts of the healing process that comes after no longer being with someone you deeply care about. At the same time, the song is about acknowledging that at some point you will heal from the pain and that it’s also okay if you haven’t yet because healing takes time.
