Penn Badgley took to Twitter to remind fans of You that his character, Joe Goldberg, should not be romanticized.

Following the release of You on Netflix, which was previously on Lifetime, fans have expressed mixed emotions towards Penn’s character, Joe. Some viewers can’t stand Joe and his abusive ways, while others are sympathizing with him and giving him the benefit of the doubt.

However, Badgley is not a fan of the support for his character’s antics. The actor took the time to answer a few of his fans regarding the show to let them know that Joe should not be lusted after and is definitely, the bad guy. Penn responded to one fan saying, “…look what a response this is getting. People wanna talk about problematic/interesting dimensions of the show which is a positive thing.” Last September in an interview with Vulture, Badgley made it clear that he feels detached from his character because of his dislike for him and hopes that the cast and writers will be held accountable for any blind spots within the show.

You stars Elizabeth Lail alongside Badgley and has already been renewed for a second season, which will continue on Netflix upon release.
