Interview: Anna Cathcart on ‘To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before’
Anna Cathcart is best known as Dizzy Tremaine in the popular Disney franchise, Descendants. She can also be seen as Kitty, everyone’s favorite little sister, in the Netflix movie, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. The third installment of the Descendants will be released in early 2019 with a mini-movie from the franchise releasing this fall. Anna sat down with Glitter to discuss her upcoming roles, what she does in her spare time, her favorite book right now, and what she would do if she wasn’t an actress. Read on to find out more about this amazing actress!
GLITTER: Did you always want to be an actress?
ANNA: It had been a dream of mine since I was little, and watching Disney Channel everyday made me wish I could be there myself. But I never thought it could be a reality for me and that it could be something I could do for real. Sometimes I still can’t believe that it is!
GLITTER: What was it like playing Kitty on the Netflix movie, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before?
ANNA: It was amazing! Kitty was such a fun role to play – I’m so lucky and grateful to have had the opportunity to portray such a strong and smart and loveable character! I loved all her lines and scenes! And working with the cast and crew was awesome!
GLITTER: Do you think the movie is a relatable movie?
ANNA: Yes, I definitely think this movie is relatable on so many levels. I myself personally relate to Lara Jean and I love seeing “real” girls being portrayed on screen. I think it’s super cool that Lara Jean never had to change herself in any way for Peter, she just continued to be the quirky loveable girl she always was.
GLITTER: Will we see another Descendants movie any time soon?
ANNA: Descendants 3 is coming out in the summer of 2019 and I seriously cannot wait for everyone to see it! With the new soundtrack and all the dance numbers it’s going to be even bigger and better than the last. Working on this project was an absolute dream!
GLITTER: What do you love to do in your spare time?
ANNA: I really love hanging out with my big sister and my dog. I also love taking photos and doing hip hop dance. I don’t dance a lot right now but I’m hoping to get more into it!
GLITTER: If you weren’t an actress, what would you want to do instead?
ANNA: I think being a photographer would be really cool, especially a fashion photographer! I’m taking a photography course right now at school and there’s so many cool skills to learn. Or I could imagine being a screenwriter, I would love to see what it would be like to be on the other side of the camera and see your ideas come to life!
GLITTER: How do you stay grounded in this business?
ANNA: I’m really close to my family and I’m just a “normal” kid when I’m at home and not filming. I really look up to my family and want them to be proud of me. I’m also still a full-time regular student at a public school and I try to juggle both my acting career and my school life because both are priorities for me. I think it’s really important to stay true to your values and not get too caught up with the many possible distractions in this industry.
GLITTER: What is something fans may not know about you?
ANNA: I’m a big scaredy-cat when it comes to scary movies! It doesn’t even have to be a horror movie, I get freaked out so easily. Even though I know it’s just pretend I can’t watch!
GLITTER: Best advice you were ever given?
ANNA: When I was offered my very first role, which was the lead in a tv series that was filming in Toronto (I live in Vancouver) I was freaking out and didn’t know what to do. It meant moving away from my home and my sister and dad. My dad said to me “Carpe diem,” which basically means “seize the day.” As in seize the moments and the opportunities that you are presented with today, right now, and enjoy them because you don’t know what the future will hold. I’m so, so glad that I took his advice and went for it because it was an amazing experience and it changed my life forever!
GLITTER: Favorite book right now?
ANNA: I’m not reading it right now, but I absolutely loved Everything Everything by Nicola Yoon – it’s my favorite book! I didn’t see the twist coming!
GLITTER: Do you have any new projects coming up that you can tell us about?
ANNA: Filming Descendants 3 this past summer was my latest project and I had so so much fun on that set! I can’t wait for it to come out. I hope you’re as excited about Summer 2019 as I am!
GLITTER: What positive message do you hope to send women who follow you?
ANNA: Stay true to yourself and your values. It can be really hard sometimes because you can feel pulled in a direction where you might not want to go. I know what that can feel like, and it’s not easy, but it’s so important to stay true to you! Growing up can be hard to understand but remember you are not alone.
GLITTER: Many women are coming forward in media and standing up for their rights as women. How important is this issue to you?
ANNA: I feel so lucky to say that I have always felt I could use my voice as a girl and that I’ve never experienced any problems with this issue first hand. I understand that it’s not like that for everybody and it makes me so happy to know that day by day, more and more women are feeling empowered to come forward and stand up for their rights. I hope that one day soon, we won’t have to talk about women standing up for their rights like it is big news because it would just be normal. I hope one day soon, I believe one day soon, we can all be treated equal.
GLITTER: How can fans follow you?
