Billy Porter Brought Camp to the Met Gala
Actor, singer, and performer Billy Porter shut down the pink carpet with his entrance look. Known for his androgynous looks on the carpet, the Pose star took “making an entrance” to another level. Inspired by Ancient Egypt, Porter wore a custom made The Blonds bejeweled catsuit with 10-foot wings, 24-karat gold headpiece, along with custom gold-leaf Giuseppe Zanotti shoes and jewelry by Andreoli, Oscar Heyman and John Hardy. In a night when celebrities are asked to unleash their creativity, Porter definitely made a scene.
As if his head to toe golden look was not enough, Porter was also carried in by six men before walking on the pink carpet. During a quick interview with Liza Koshy for Vogue, Porter described his thoughts on the MET Gala Camp: Notes of Fashion theme.
“Well the kids call it extra,” he said. “For many years it has been used as a pejorative. When you have things like this, it brings respect back and when it’s done properly, it’s one of the highest forms of fashion and art.”
“The look came because Ryan Murphy said you should go as Diana Ross all five looks from the Majagomy”, said Porter but then told Murphy that he didn’t want to work that hard. He also referenced Elizabeth Taylor Cleopatra and Bob Mackie costumes for Cher.
