Lady Gaga’s Amazing Met Gala Transformations
With teamwork, planning, and a true connection to the understanding of “camp”, Lady Gaga was able to prepare a defining moment at the Met Gala. Lady Gaga has had a plethora of outfits on the red carpet. From her 2010 MTV Video Music Award meat dress to her white pearl-studded suit with matching shoes, frizzed blonde hair and frosted lashes at the 2013 ‘Glamour’ Women of the Year Award. She’s never been one to back down from art and exploring the story behind it. This year at the 2019 Met Gala, her camp look was inspired by Susan Sontag note on Camp.
“Camp is the way of seeing the world as an aesthetic phenomenon. One that rests on innocence, and that innocence is revealed by the person, thing or performance. Otherwise, rises in extravagance. This is to say extravagance is not the point. Camp is serious in its attitude and in its irony.” stated Sontag.
Through this Gaga was confident her team would come up with a concept that wasn’t over the top but right on point with the theme.
Gaga said: “I know that I have a camp soul. I knew because we’re such a family and the way that we work together as a creative collective, that what we would create together would be camp. Working together with Brandon Maxwell, her creative team was able to design a 25-foot three dress train made from the same material. The first dress was a pink cape dress to match her hairbow with a blown out black dress to match her umbrella. The second dress was a fitted pink gown where she would order her helpers to put on her gloves. Her final outfit paid tribute to her Monster album when performed in underwear and fishnets on stage. Me wearing fishnets, bra and panties playing piano on stage, this to me was camp. Camp becomes camp over time. My last reveal is something I did over ten years ago. It’s campy now.”
With only two days of fittings and full-on rehearsals, the Met Gala host thoroughly prepared to not only bring viewers art but to take on camp through her inspiration. Check out the full video below.
