Millie Bobby Brown is Opening Up About Her Experience With Bullies
The Stranger Things star shared her experiences with both real life and online bullying in a recent Glamour Magazine interview.
Even though most people can’t relate to speaking at the United Nations and securing million-dollar movie deals at 15, Millie Bobby Brown spoke candidly about a topic that affects everyone: bullying. She sat down with fellow British actor Orlando Bloom for an interview for the cover of the Glamour UK Activism issue.
“I was bullied at school back in England,” she said during the interview in the May digital issue of Glamour UK. “So it’s extremely important for me to speak out against bullying.”
“I actually switched schools because of it. It created a lot of anxiety and issues that I still deal with today.” She continued. “I have dealt with situations both in real life and online that are soul-breaking and it genuinely hurts reading some of the things people have said.”
Despite this, Millie has used her experiences as a way to advocate for herself and others. She went on to explain how she set the bar of how she wanted to be treated with respect onset of her first feature film Godzilla: King of Monsters (in theaters May 31).
“Going back three years ago people wouldn’t listen to me, and now these years are gone by and I have witnessed so much love and respect for youth on set,” she shared. “It makes me so much happier that adults actually appreciate youth and opinions.”
“On a set, I don’t want to be treated as a minor,” explained Millie, who shot to major stardom on Stranger Things at the age of 12. “Although I am, I am not there to just be treated like a child — I am there to be treated as a co-worker and my opinion be treated as such. You know, you are a man, I am a girl but that doesn’t matter — our opinions are equally as important as each other.”
Since her debut, Millie Bobby Brown has become the youngest person ever to appear on the Time’s 100 Most Influential People list and the youngest UNICEF goodwill ambassador. She’s using this platform to speak out about gun violence and the importance of safety for children around the world.
