Ruby Rose on How Her Gender & Sexuality Labels Have Changed

Entertainment Weekly

Ruby Rose opened up to Entertainment Weekly about gender-neutrality and gender-fluidity, and why she had to relearn how certain labels have changed over the years. In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, she discussed how she has self-identified as a lesbian over the years but was confronted with a response from her fans about how gender-fluidity technically didn’t mix with the label of “lesbian.” But instead of refusing to listen, she stopped and tried to understand what was being said.

“‘I’m a woman that identifies as a woman. I’m not trans. But if being gender-fluid means that I can’t identify as a woman at any point, then I guess I can’t be that.’ Maybe I need to make up another term, one that doesn’t step on any toes. One where I can be fluid in my gender, but also a lesbian, because otherwise, I’m not sure what I am.”—Ruby Rose, via Entertainment Weekly

Ruby brings up a great question in this day and age, and one that a lot of people struggle with in some way or another.

What exactly do labels mean, and do they lose or increase their meaning over time when society rapidly shifts their definition? It’s something we’re all trying to figure out.
