What ‘The Bold Type’ Character Kat Edison Means to the Culture
The fictional character Kat Edison played by Aisha Dee on Freeform’s The Bold Type is important in ways many don’t understand.
Kat’s character is the epitome of intersectionality. She’s a queer, biracial, woman living in a world where expressing any of those parts are extremely tough. Discovering her sexuality later than most (25) is a likely story for many like Kat who aren’t sure how to express how they’re feeling.

Don’t let anyone judge you for being who you are. This is a #BreakupLetter, #Pride edition.
Kat’s character is designed as a voice. She speaks up for herself and for others when faced with injustice which lets everyone watching know that it is more than okay to express who you are.
As a professional, Scarlet’s head of social media, and City Council candidate, Kat is proof that a woman of color can hold a position of power without dimming her light. Kat holds on to herself, effortlessly rocking her box braids and curly afros and not being subjected to dull pants suits. Her mean her style is impeccable. Prints, patterns, jumpsuits…can we say style icon? The inclusion of these elements creates a sense of normalcy, that none of these factors are out of the ordinary in the workplace (rather they shouldn’t be).
Kat Edison is a voice not only for herself but for people across the globe that can relate to her struggles and her triumphs, proving that representation truly does matter. The Season 3 finale of The Bold Type aired on Freeform June 11th and the hit series has been renewed for a fourth season. We’ll be looking forward to seeing more Kat (and Sutton and Tiny Jane).
