Everyone Needs to See Dove Cameron’s Inspirational Selfie
Dove Cameron is no newcomer to protesting the hyper-sexualization of women’s bodies in today’s society.
On countless occasions, she has posted pictures and selfies that taunt the strict expectations of women, especially Disney stars. In an Instagram posted earlier this week, Dove captions her braless and flawless selfie with the quote:
“Women HAVE a history that has been systematically suppressed. Our collective spirituality has largely been tainted to fit the needs of men and those in power. This has a profound effect on the self-esteem of girls and the women they become. This influence can be seen in their life choices, partners and financial security for the rest of their lives. It also has an effect on the way their future partners will view them – and ultimately treat them. Our girls deserve better. The time to introduce feminism and woman-centered spirituality to ALL children is now.”
Many people hold Disney stars to certain expectations because they usually have a younger following. It is because of this, that Dove’s message is so important. Teaching our children at a young age that women can have independence is essential to having them grow up to be confident women. On top of that, kids seeing a braless selfie isn’t as dangerous as some may think. In fact, the more that kids are less sensitized to the human body, the more they will grow up to see the female body as just that: a human body. It’s the policing of our bodies that creates a society that will hyper-sexuality everything about us.
The more young girls see other women promoting their confidence and lifting others up, the more our society will grow to be accepting of their bodies and of themselves. Those who learn at a young age that they have the ability to be independent, physically and spiritually, will grow up to be women who inspire others.
Dove’s message is inspiring to women and kids everywhere. Faced with the pressure of fame, she is able to break boundaries and speak her truths to her followers. The example she sets for the young girls who follow her is one of confidence. self-love, and body positivity. We could all use a little Dove inspiration in our lives.
