Jharrel Jerome Wins Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series
The 71st Emmy Awards took place on September 22, 2019 at the Microsoft Theatre at L.A Live in Los Angeles, California.
The awards brought on many different winners making history. Among these winners was 21-year-old Jharrel Jerome. Announced by Angela Basset, Jerome became the first Afro-Latino and Dominican to win an Emmy for the lead actor in a limited series award. Jerome won this award for his role in playing Korey Wise of the Central Park 5 boys in the Netflix series, “When They See Us.”
Jerome took to Instagram to show his appreciation for receiving the award.
Originally from the Bronx, New York, Jerome not only made his borough proud but this was a win for all Afro-Latinos. Fans and celebrities rushed to Twitter to show support for Jerome’s win. But what really connected the fans was the speech Jerome gave after winning his award. Holding back tears while accepting this award, Jerome delivered a heart felt speech that included dedicating his award to the Central Park 5 boys and his family.
