Award-winning actor Will Smith is set to star in and direct new Netflix film The Council. After the success of the previous Netflix film, Bright, starring Will Smith as a police officer in an alternative world, Netflix has decided to produce another film starring Smith, only this time he will portray crime boss Nicky Barnes.

The streaming service announced in a recent tweet that Smith, 50, will star and produce the new movie about Barnes and his Harlem-based crime syndicate. The film revolves around Barnes, who formed The Council, which was a seven-man African-American crime syndicate, in 1972. At the time The Council controlled a large part of the heroin trade in New York and later partnered with another large group expanding the empire.

Netflix has not yet given a release date for the film but with Smith’s recent success in Disney’s Aladdin and Ang Lee’s sci-fi thriller Gemini Man, his next film is bound to be a smash hit.
