The streaming service announced in a recent tweet that Smith, 50, will star and produce the new movie about Barnes and his Harlem-based crime syndicate. The film revolves around Barnes, who formed The Council, which was a seven-man African-American crime syndicate, in 1972. At the time The Council controlled a large part of the heroin trade in New York and later partnered with another large group expanding the empire.
Netflix has not yet given a release date for the film but with Smith’s recent success in Disney’s Aladdin and Ang Lee’s sci-fi thriller Gemini Man, his next film is bound to be a smash hit.
