INTERVIEW: Savannah May Discusses Her Morning Rituals + More
Actress, Savannah May, is a series regular on the Nickelodeon show, Knight Squad, a role that she’s held through 2018 and 2019, and recently starred in the Lifetime original movie, The Secret Life of Cheerleaders. Savannah May, who has been acting since she was eleven, shares on her role as Buttercup in Knight Squad, how she prepares for roles, the best advice she was ever given, her morning rituals, and the projects she’s working on next.
GLITTER: What can you tell us your role in the Lifetime original movie, The Secret Life of Cheerleaders?
SAVANNAH: So, Ava is the new transfer student at Roosevelt High. She grew up dancing, but after a really tough year, she is trying to start over. At her new school, she finds out that they don’t have a dance team, and her overly ambitious mom convinces her to try out for the cheer squad. When she does make the squad, she goes from a nobody to instant High School royalty. None of this sits well with Queen Bee and captain of the Roosevelt Lionesses, Katrina. That’s when Katrina begins to show her true colors, and Ava slowly realizes that being a part of this elite squad comes at a price.
GLITTER: What can you tell us about your role on the Nickelodeon series, Knight Squad? Who do you play? How, like or unlike your character, are you?
SAVANNAH: I played Buttercup, the happy go lucky best friend to the most mischievous girl in Knight School, Sage. We were a part of the Kraken squad, which was one of the three squads in the school. Buttercup was always bubbly, energetic, and even though she had her ditsy moments, she had her own unique way of doing things. I think I was a lot like Buttercup in the aspect of being a happy, energetic person and always trying to see the best in people.
GLITTER: How do you prepare for your roles?
SAVANNAH: To prepare for a role, I really like to dive into the script, to get a feeling of what the character is going through at that moment. I always try to figure out what they are like in the beginning of the story and see how they evolve as a person by the end of it. You know, I want to make sure there is a character arc and that the audience can see a progression throughout the film.
GLITTER: What is your approach to auditioning?
SAVANNAH: I always try to add my own spin on the character. I’m not saying to do something completely different than what the casting director wants, but I’ve realized that if you add a little something that makes it your own, you’ll stand out in the audition room. Plus, you can’t be afraid to take a risk and make bold choices. If you go in timid and scared, they will notice that you aren’t really comfortable within your own ability. So my motto for auditions is just to be myself and to follow my gut instinct.
GLITTER: What do you like to do in your free time?
SAVANNAH: Binge watch shows on Netflix haha! I’m kind of a homebody, and especially if I have been working a lot, I like to take a day or so to just chill. Although, I really do love going to the movies, taking dance classes, and just hanging out with friends!
GLITTER: If you weren’t acting, what would you like to do instead?
SAVANNAH: That’s such a hard question because I really can’t see myself doing anything else. I started off with just dance when I was younger, but once I discovered my love for acting, that was it for me. I believe that once you’ve found your passion and you know what you want to do in life, it’s difficult to go do something different, and for me, that’s acting.
GLITTER: Do you have any celebrity crushes?
SAVANNAH: Hands down, Shawn Mendes! I’ve been a fan of his since his vine days! I actually went to his concert in LA back in July, and it was the best concert I have ever been to. He has this natural performance quality about him, and we all know his talent is undeniable. Plus, he seems like such a kind person, and I personally love that he has continued to stay grounded even though he is one of the biggest names in the industry.
