The Weeknd debuted his single “Heartless” live on CBS’ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert with an unconventional, experimental musical production.

The Weeknd gave the Late Show audience and viewers a visual experience that took everyone on a trippy journey through the work of cinematographers, the set production, and the lyrics of “Heartless.” The Weeknd’s performance on The Late Show marked his musical return since his last project, My Dear Melancholy, and this comeback is beginning with a psychedelic era.

In the performance, instead of performing in front of the audience with a live band, The Weeknd performed in the backstage halls of the Ed Sullivan Theatre. The set was similar to the movie Inception, with shifting walls, moving figures, and included The Weeknd walking through multiple moving sets, creating a mind-bending performance.

At the end of the performance with the use of camera work, The Weeknd appears to be backstage and then walks to the main stage of the theatre to amazed audience members and Stephen Colbert.

The Weeknd’s ability to create a visual music video transformation on a Late Night show blew many viewers away, and on Twitter, fans are calling it amazing.

The Weeknd’s performance on The Late Show is showing he is going beyond the limits. Make sure to listen to “Heartless” and his most recent project, “Blinding Lights” here.
