Find out How Awkwafina Addressed Her “Oscar Snub”

Awkwafina is focused on her promising future and all of the amazing accomplishments of the present.

During a press tour for her upcoming show Nora From Queens, Awkwafina was asked how she felt about The Farewell not receiving an Oscar nomination in the wake of her historic Golden Globes win and the film’s success.

“We had a couple of text messages but everything [was] just about how appreciative we all are of how long this run has been,” Awkwafina said. “The Farewell came out last January at Sundance and we really didn’t know where it would take us. To see all the attention that it’s gotten, that feels like a win.”

While she acknowledged that there were some amazing performances and women-helmed movies that deserved recognition, Awkwafina conceded that she was just grateful to see the film do so well in spite of its rocky beginnings.

“My emotional reaction to all of this really is that I’m grateful for this journey. We didn’t know that The Farewell would literally have a home,” she said. “We didn’t know if anybody would buy The Farewell, that it would be on the screens. To express that as far as we’ve come, it’s so much more. It’s the journey. For that, me personally, I think there’s always more work to be done. Of course.”

Regardless, fellow actors and fans have still been vocal in calling out the Oscars for passing over performances by Awkwafina, Jennifer Lopez, and other actors and directors of color for this year’s ceremony.

While promoting his Netflix movie A Fall From Grace, Tyler Perry recently mentioned the controversy, saying that while he didn’t “have an opinion of it either way,” he felt that Awkwafina “absolutely” should have been recognized.

Fans have also come out in support Awkwafina on social media, where there are a number of posts criticizing the Academy and lamenting the lack of a nomination in light of her moving performance in The Farewell.

At this month’s Golden Globes ceremony, Awkwafina became the first Asian American to win a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy. Despite the lack of a nomination, it seems likely that she will make a show-stopping appearance at the Academy Awards as well.
