Kandace Springs Rocks the Samueli Theater at Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Orange County
Kandace Springs, a Nashville-based singer, and pianist whose sound is a blend of jazz, soul, and pop, graced the stage of the Segerstrom Center for the Arts with an all-female trio this past weekend including Taylor Moore on drums and Taylen Bryant on electric and standup bass, which channeled black girl magic at its best.
Springs grew up on the sounds of such legends as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Roberta Flack, and Norah Jones but has created a sound all her own. The legendary pop star Prince, invited Springs to perform alongside him at Paisley Park for the 30th anniversary of “Purple Rain” in 2014 which was no doubt a life changer. Since then she signed with Blue Note Records, recorded two albums, opened for Daryl Hall & John Oates and Train in 2018, appeared on the Sanborn Sessions with Sanborn, and performed at the National Jazz Workshop in Nashville with Kirk Whalum.
Kandace’s sound is like reading a novel by Toni Morrison. You can hear her soul, her history and her depth in every note. She was raised in the south as the biracial daughter of a soul singer in Tennesee. Her dad, Scat Springs, sang backup for an amazing list of artists: Brian McKnight, Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin, Michael McDonald, and Donna Summer to name a few. Listening to Kandace is like driving in a car on a long ride through the south in the spring with the gentle wind on your face taking in the people and landscapes, but still catching glimpses of her edgy sound from time spent in NYC and LA.
Her performance at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts was mesmerizing this past weekend as she donned all black with her beautiful locks of curls belting out tracks from her new album, as well as classics from such hitmakers as Sade. Speaking of her new album, The Women Who Raised Me by Kandace Springs drops March 27th and it’s a tribute album to all of the powerful legends that shaped who she is today along with an awesome list of collabs including Christian McBride, Norah Jones, David Sanborn, Elena Pinderhughes, Chris Potter, and Avishai Cohen.
