It’s Time to Say Goodbye to ‘Modern Family’

ABC/Jill Greenberg

The show has aired on ABC for the past 11 years and it is finally coming to an end.

Modern Family is ABC’s longest-running comedy series, and, at its peak, brought in nearly 13 million viewers per episode. It won the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Show its first five seasons but has not won an award since. Sadly, the show does not get as many views today, so they have decided to officially end the series. There will be a 2-hour finale airing Wednesday, April 8th.

The show was ground-breaking when it aired in 2009 for many reasons. They had Cam and Mitchell, a gay couple who adopted an Asian daughter, and the unlikely marriage between Jay and Gloria because of their age difference. “I think it was revolutionary back then, and I don’t think it’s as revolutionary now,” said Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who plays Mitchell, “I think that’s a great thing.”

While a lot of the show’s set up has been done before, such as the mockumentary style done by The Office, the execution of the actors is what made it so great. The cast has accumulated 29 Emmy nominations and 6 wins. “There’s the cliché that you don’t realize what you have until it’s gone, but that is absolutely not the case here,” Steve Levitan, the show’s creator, writer, producer, and director, said, “I can’t tell you how many times we’d be shooting and we would stop and say to each other, ‘How lucky are we?’”

Make sure to tune into the hour-long finale on April 8th.
