Dune, Frank Herbert’s sci-fi novel, is being directed by Denis Villeneuve and it looks stunning.

Vanity Fair released an exclusive look at the new sci-fi film Dune. It is being directed by Denis Villeneuve who also directed Arrival and Blade Runner 2049. Dune is so complex which is why it has been difficult for others to adapt. “It’s a book that tackles politics, religion, ecology, spirituality—and with a lot of characters,” says Villeneuve. “I think that’s why it’s so difficult. Honestly, it’s by far the most difficult thing I’ve done in my life.”

The cast includes Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, and Oscar Isaac. Chalamet is playing the young royal Paul Atreides who fights to protect the planet Arrakis even as it tries to destroy him. Zendaya will be playing Chani, the mysterious woman who haunts Paul in his dreams with glowing blue eyes. Oscar Isaac is Duke Letto, Paul’s father and head of House Atreides, a powerful galactic family.

Herbert’s novel became widely popular in the 1960s and has since then influenced other great sci-fi works such as Star Wars and Game of Thrones. While there have been a few tries at transferring the novel to the big screen, none have succeeded. Villeneuve’s goal is to create a Dune that has only existed in the mind of the readers. Since there is so much to cover, the novel will be split into two films with the first part being released on December 18th.
