The Weeknd makes an appearance in the May issue of Variety Magazine.

Throughout the interview with Variety The Weeknd shares how every part of his background and life is implemented in his music, talks his favorite collaborations, and his journey leading up to the release of his latest album After Hours.

Due to the pandemic, The Weeknd’s team were unsure whether or not to delay the album. “I cut that discussion off right away,” The Weeknd tells Variety. “Fans had been waiting for the album, and I felt like I had to deliver it. Music streaming is down 10%, stores are closed, people can’t go to concerts, but I didn’t care. I knew how important it was to my fans,” he continues.

Indeed the release of the singer’s album was very important to his fans as the pandemic did not stop his supporters from streaming and purchasing the After Hours album.

Variety mentions that The Weeknd’s album had “2 billion global streams, nearly 2 million in global consumption (a combination of streams and sales) in its first week, easily debuting at No. 1 in the U.S., his home country of Canada, Australia, the U.K., Ireland, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy and New Zealand”.

In fact, this is the 3rd consecutive week that The Weeknd’s After Hours album ranked at number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. The Weeknd took to his Instagram saying, “3 in a row because of XO”.
