Interview: Ashley Nicole Williams, Taylor Hickson, Jessica Sutton + Demetria McKinney From Freeform’s New Drama Motherland: Fort Salem

Freeform’s new drama is worthy of your quarantine binge list. Motherland: Fort Salem is set in an alternate America where, in exchange for their freedom, three witches now work with the government to fight terrorist threats with supernatural strategies. We sat down with Ashley Nicole Willams, Jessica Sutton, Demetria McKinney, and Taylor Hickson to find out more about their new roles, how they got started in acting, and what they are doing to keep busy during social isolation.

GLITTER: How long have you been acting?
ASHLEY: Since I was five-years-old.

GLITTER: What can you tell us about Freeform’s new drama Motherland: Fort Salem and your character Abigail?
ASHLEY: Motherland: Fort Salem is a kick-ass show, run by powerful ass women, who are breaking down all of the barriers. My character Abigail is brash, unquestionably alpha, driven, courageous, and a bit of a man-eater… but most importantly, she is a Bellweather. She comes from a long lineage of Generals and Lieutenants in the army, so she has some pretty big shoes to fill. Being a Bellweather, Abigail has to uphold the family name, and that means making it to War College, and not tarnishing the Bellweathers in her path. She cannot fail. Because if she does, she’ll be the first and only Bellweather to do so.

GLITTER: How are you like your character?
ASHLEY: Abigail and I are almost the same person really. I’m just not as big of a “Queen B” (if you know what I mean) as she is. I do, however, have very high expectations for myself and tend to put a lot of pressure on myself as a result of that. This is Abigail. We are also scared of failing, scared of letting people down, and ultimately… letting ourselves down.

GLITTER: How do you prepare for your roles? What is your approach to auditioning?
ASHLEY: Initially, I read the script, and afterward, I coach with my acting coach over my sides. We discuss character development, subtext, relationship building, how my character feels about every line in the scene, etc.

GLITTER: What was your big break?
ASHLEY: Playing Abigail Bellweather in Motherland: Fort Salem.

GLITTER: Can you share highlights from some of your past roles?
ASHLEY: I did an indie film, Whisper, with Maia Mitchell about a year ago. There was a scene where I had to be fully covered in body glitter… yes, from head to toe. That has to be one of the dopest highlights of my career.

GLITTER: How do you use your voice for change?
ASHLEY: It’s extremely important for me to volunteer my time with programs for underprivileged kids and youth. Going to school at Baylor in Waco, TX, I’ve witnessed extreme poverty and homelessness in the Waco community. With my growing platform, I hope to devote my energy and resources to ending homelessness.

GLITTER: Best advice you were ever given?
ASHLEY: “When people show you who they are, believe them.”

GLITTER: Who is your mentor?
ASHLEY: After being a part of the 2017 class of the Nate Parker Film Institute, Nate Parker himself became my mentor. He truly cares about the “up incoming” generations and strives to make sure we have every tool we need to succeed. And I admire him for that.

GLITTER: Who are you are looking forward to working with next?
ASHLEY: I would love to work with Taraji P Henson one day. She is my all-time favorite actress, and working with her would not only be a dream but an amazing learning opportunity.

ASHLEY: Either playing X-Men’s Storm in a Marvel movie or bringing a Disney Princess to life in a live-action.

GLITTER: How long have you been acting?
JESSICA: Basically from when I could play dress-up with my brother and entertain my parents. But as a career, since 2015.

GLITTER: What was your big break?
JESSICA: Landing the role as Tally Craven, in Motherland: Fort Salem…I had up until that point never been a lead let alone ever worked in television. As a South African actress, self-taping in my bedroom in Cape Town, I was aware that the chances were not in my favor…it blows my mind that I was cast.

It’s really hard to single out one major event as every event big and small seems so interconnected and integrated, like if one event didn’t happen I wouldn’t be who I am, let alone where I am. Playing Mia in The Kissing Booth allowed me to get international representation based on the buzz and the crazy success that the show went on to have …without my managers I wouldn’t have received that self-tape for Motherland…

Perhaps my biggest break was being born into the family I have…I wouldn’t have been able to pursue acting without my parent’s financial support in those first years,  allowing me to squirrel away any money I did happen to make and offered me time and unwavering support, while I got my bearings in the industry.

GLITTER: What can you tell us about Freeform’s new drama Motherland: Fort Salem and your character Tally?
JESSICA: Motherland: Fort Salem is set in an alternative world where witches have escaped persuasion 300 years ago by making a deal with the US government to fight on the front lines. What really struck me about the world that Elliot Laurence created is not only the apparent gender role reversal but how the symbol of the witch is portrayed. So refreshing to go beyond the clichéd Halloween crone or the temptress who fornicates with the devil… the world and characters in this show speak of a vision of empowerment. In an anecdote, “ waking the witch, waking the woman.” is how I have described the show to my friends. The first thing I remember reading about Tally was the character description which said: “She is a living exclamation mark.” Beyond that, she is half child, half ancient who is yet to learn the difference between innocence and wisdom.  She is the wide-eyed, bushy-tailed, open beating heart. The glue holding the unit together and without giving anything away…she like the show is one big surprise.

GLITTER: How are you like your character?
JESSICA: That would be our shared boundless enthusiasm for life 😊

Playing Tally has been a love letter to my most innocent self.  A reminder of the power of compassion and curiosity.  Something that has really struck me with the release of the show has been the fans response to wanting to protect Tally, ( they have dubbed her captain of the baby brigade ) I think as actors we portray characters who are pieces of ourselves, Tally often felt like my 10-year-old kid self, who believes she can save the world.  I think somewhere deep down we all have that ten-year-old kid who wants to be a superhero and we know that growing up can bring a world of hurt and teach that kid some pretty tough lessons…often turning that kid hard and cynical and distrusting…it’s been moving to know audiences are becoming aware of wanting to protect the most innocent part of themselves.

“ Unit Unity” is one of my favorite Tally lines as she tries once again to remind Abigail and Raelle that their collective survival depends on their unity…and in this current global crisis we are facing, I couldn’t think of a more poignant call to action, something I hope that audiences resonate with.

GLITTER: How do you prepare for your roles?
JESSICA: I always start with the mechanics, the scaffoldings of script, character breakdown, intention and obstacle, accent and line learning. If time allows I love unpacking the process with an acting coach or mentor, on Motherland that was Deb Podowski who was such a phenomenal source of support for me.  Likewise with accent, as I like to joke that American is not my first language…so if I can I always acquire the ear and help of an accent coach. On Motherland that was Tony Alcantar. Other sources that have been hugely beneficial are Amy Walker’s free YouTube tutorials in standard American and the Accent Kit app.

Once the scaffolding is in place, I can get lost in interior decoration and find the emotional life of it. I keep a character journal and I am never without music.  I love building a playlist around script, a song for the scene or a character. For me, emotion is a musical thing and the fastest way to drop into the heart and out of the mind.

GLITTER: What is your approach to auditioning?
JESSICA: To quote one of my mentors and acting coaches, Matthew Harrison, who says “ the audition is the actor’s job.”   And something else he said that forever changed my approach is: understanding that everyone from the casting director to the producer has a problem, and they are really hoping you’ll be that solution for them. Holding these two concepts in my mind helped me relax and have fun in the room, to enjoy those seven minutes that I am the role and to know the rest is not within my control.

GLITTER: Can you share highlights from some of your past roles?
JESSICA: I have been fortunate to have only worked with incredible ensemble casts from my very first international gig on Saints and Strangers to The Kissing Booth to Motherland where there is such strong fellowship. The feeling that everyone has each other’s backs and we are all just bringing our bit to the table, collectively contributing to something that is greater than any of us. I have really experienced the power of collaboration at its best…which honestly feels like real magic

So much of why I have been attracted to this industry is the menagerie of people you come into contact with. The intense intimacy shared with total strangers, interactions that are so brief, yet life-altering.  These strangers start to feel like family, reality morphs into fantasy, you grow and learn and create in this isolated bubble and then.. pop..it’s all over and everyone disperses to the winds and back to real life. It’s such a strange and beautiful education.

GLITTER: How do you use your voice for change?
JESSICA: Whenever possible, I speak my truth forward, try to be impeccable with my word and strive to do all things with great love.

GLITTER: Best advice you were ever given?
JESSICA: In this industry, you need to be a fast judge of character and the best businessman I know is my dad. He says that the quickest judge of character is in how someone treats those they want nothing from. That’s why I prefer my meetings in restaurants so I can observe how the person in question treats the serving staff.

GLITTER: Who is your mentor?
JESSICA: My father.

GLITTER: Who are you are looking forward to working with next?
JESSICA: Haha can it be Phoebe Waller-Bridge, please?!

JESSICA: Facetiming my partner Steve in lockdown in Vancouver.  Making food with my mom. Having dance-offs with my brother who is always introducing me to the best music. Masterclass has such great seminars on everything and I’m currently re-listening to Neil Gaiman on creative writing. I’m a huge advocator for naps and taking a ten-minute tan when the sun is out and I love to reading, current book recommendation; Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott.

GLITTER: Favorite ways to center yourself and relax?
JESSICA: Taking a walk in nature, candles, taking a bath, and writing in my journal.

GLITTER: Favorite foods to snack on?
JESSICA: Anything cooked by my mother. Go to snacks would have to be salty almonds and ALL FRUIT, my family’s nickname for me is “fruit bat.”

GLITTER: What are your top 5 binge-worthy shows?

JESSICA: Morning cup of coffee, black.  Thereafter, tea please strong  Ceylon with a touch of milk.

JESSICA: Sunglasses and jewelry (a bit of a magpie in my collection of vintage!).

GLITTER: Any projects you can tell us about that you’re working on next?
JESSICA: I recently wrapped on an action-packed feature called Rogue, directed by MJ Bassett and starring Megan Fox.  Release date and details have yet to be disclosed but hopefully will be gracing screens by end of the year.

GLITTER: Any special talents outside of acting?
JESSICA: Does reading, napping and eating count?  I get an A+ in these specialties.

GLITTER: How long have you been acting?
DEMETRIA: I’ve been acting for over thirteen years now.

GLITTER: What was your big break?
DEMETRIA: My big break came from House of Payne with Mr. Tyler Perry, I play the role of Janine Payne. This was definitely my launching pad and preparation for many roles to come over the years.

GLITTER: What can you tell us about Freeform’s new drama Motherland: Fort Salem and your character Anacostia?
DEMETRIA: Motherland: Fort Salem is set in an alternate today where witches, led by General Alder struck a deal with the government to fight the nation’s wars in order to stop persecution. My role, Anacostia Quartermaine, is a no-nonsense, loyal, sometimes dogmatic drill sergeant who is responsible for not only teaching the new recruits about their powers and war but also about loyalty and the need for one another.

GLITTER: How are you like your character?
DEMETRIA: I’m a lot like my character  Anacostia, in the sense that I think I’m a very strong person, but our strengths are derived from different places. I’m very silly, relaxed, and empathetic to a fault sometimes which gives me the strength to find the good in people. She is strong-minded, loyal, determined, and unshakable which gives her the strength to build the good in people.

GLITTER: How do you prepare for your roles?
DEMETRIA: It depends on the role. I can’t move in a cookie-cutter fashion with each character. Janine required something far different than Anacostia. What I can say is with each person I do play, I learn something different about myself and that collaboration is exciting.

GLITTER: What is your approach to auditioning?
DEMETRIA: Whew! I go into each audition with the full knowledge of the words, a good sense of who I think that character is,  but with an open mind and a yearning for notes. When it’s done, I’ve learned I need to let it go. I can’t second guess myself, I can’t wish for a second chance, I have to move on to the next and trust that whatever’s for me is for me.

GLITTER: What was your big break?
DEMETRIA: Playing Carissa in UMC’s A House Divided was my first stab at playing a villain. She’s crafty, manipulative, and determined to get what she wants at any cost. Diving in and portraying Whitney Houston in the Bobby Christina biopic had a duality to it. On one hand, it was an honor to play homage to someone who helped shape me musically, but on the flip side, it was terrifying. I was telling the story of someone who was often misunderstood and unable to be all that she was able to be.

GLITTER: Can you share highlights from some of your past roles?
DEMETRIA: Saints and Sinners, Tamera is the lamb of the squad. She is the good in the story and it’s always a great place to go back into that character.

GLITTER: How do you use your voice for change?
DEMETRIA: Much like the warriors in Motherland: Fort Salem use their voice to bring change, I understand that with my platform comes with influence. I’m very mindful of what I speak on to people and I operate in truth. Coming from homelessness, molestation, and single motherhood, I hope that my voice and choices shine a light on the path for others in those situations and let them know that their dreams can still come true.

GLITTER: Best advice you were ever given?
DEMETRIA: Essence Atkins was on some episodes of House of Payne with me and she sat next to me in the makeup chair and said: “the day you stop saying please and thank you to everyone in this business is the day you need to get out of it.” It was a reality check before I even needed it and a reminder that my: career, lifestyle,  and the things I’ve come out of are a blessing and never to forget that.

GLITTER: Who are you are looking forward to working with next?
DEMETRIA: I would love the opportunity to work with Don Cheadle, Charlize Theron,  Robert Downey Jr., Ryan Reynolds, Octavia Spencer, just to name a few LOL!

GLITTER: Glitter has a Celebrity #SelfLoveCampaign, and we want to know, what’s self-love mean to you?
DEMETRIA: Self-love means having the ability to accept the good the bad the ugly about yourself and love yourself enough to grow into who you want to be. We’re all flawed and that’s what makes us perfect.

GLITTER: What would be a dream role for you?
DEMETRIA: A character like Storm from Marvel’s X-MEN. Embodying powerful women still getting to tap into the fantasy space is a story that can live on through generations and shows a different aesthetic.

GLITTER: What’s on your playlist right now?
DEMETRIA: My playlist depends on my mood. Today I’ve been listening to Jasmine Sullivan radio.  Quarantine has me in a good mellow space so I’m nestling right into that right now.

GLITTER: Social Isolation has become the new normal for now. What are your favorite things to do right now throughout the day?
DEMETRIA: Bothering my son, catching up on tv shows. I’ve taken up an interest in gardening and introspection has been something I’ve learned to embrace. when I come out of this and I’m able to be around people I hope to be better around them.

GLITTER: Favorite ways to center yourself and relax?
DEMETRIA: I’ve gotten back into exercise it’s an amazing stress reliever, especially yoga, understanding how to control my headspace is so much easier with that.  I’ve also learned how to do spa treatments for myself; nothing like a good facial, and a soak in the tub with some soft music playing. It’s so soothing.  Audiobooks have quickly become a favorite. I’m learning a lot with minimal effort lol.

GLITTER: Favorite foods to snack on?
DEMETRIA: I love Dove dark chocolate with almonds, it’s my guilty pleasure. However, for the most part, I snack healthy: Apples, Kiwi, & Popcorn lol!

GLITTER: What are your top 5 binge-worthy shows?
DEMETRIA: Altered Carbon, Fleabag, Ozark, Motherland: Fort Salem, and Witcher.

DEMETRIA: Shoes and bags! With those, you can transform a simple outfit into something spectacular.

GLITTER: Any projects you can tell us about that you’re working on next?
DEMETRIA: House of Payne is returning soon on BET and I’m in talks about two other projects that I hope to be able to give details about soon

GLITTER: Any special talents outside of acting?
DEMETRIA: I started as a singer and my single, “easy,” went to #5 on the charts!

GLITTER: How long have you been acting?
TAYLOR: Since just before my 17th birthday in 2014!

GLITTER: What was your big break?
TAYLOR: I suppose that could be subjective! That’s a tricky question- I would almost argue that my first job was my break! I’m so grateful to be granted an experience that led to further opportunity.

GLITTER: What can you tell us about Freeform’s new drama Motherland: Fort Salem, and your character Raelle?
TAYLOR: Motherland is centered around a world where gender role reversal is a focal point for our universe. We have very compelling women leading this story, as opposed to the traditional female-backdrop-to-a-powerful-male-persona. Eliot Laurence created something so refreshingly original in its mix of witches and the military. It’s ethereally inventive and quick-paced. It’s wonderful in its ability to help escape the current dystopia outside and place you somewhere else for a while.

Raelle is very reluctant and jaded when first introduced. She suppresses her grief by projecting rage and pushing back against anyone or anything that challenges her. She’s navigating her youth into womanhood and that’s rarely a centerpiece in media and more of an afterthought. She endures so many changes and deep growth. I grew alongside her, she taught me so much about myself.

GLITTER: How are you like your character?
TAYLOR: We both love too hard. Sometimes at the expense of hurting other people, we love as a subconscious side effect. We don’t fall into the trap of propaganda, we follow our intuition above all.

GLITTER: How do you prepare for your roles?
TAYLOR: I often write diary entries as my character! Before and during while we see them on screen. What their inner monologue is saying is very valuable to what I take to set. I write about other characters and I fabricate interactions with them that aren’t conveyed on screen. I’m now having the epiphany that I essentially write fanfics about my own characters…

GLITTER: What is your approach to auditioning?
TAYLOR: This applies to all scene study I do- a tool I often turn to is acting verbs. It’s not always about portraying how you’re feeling, but more a focus on how you’re trying to make the other person in the scene feel. It’s much more engaging to watch.  After the audition is done, let it out of your mind or it will wreck you for weeks! My manager’s and I like to say “put it on the back burner.” Everything happens for a reason. The right project with the right people will come along at the right time.

GLITTER: Can you share highlights from some of your past roles?
TAYLOR: The complete aesthetic/vocal transformation for Petra from Deadly Class will always be a favorite of mine. It was a great reminder of how a physical change can truly move you into a separate mindset more fluidly. Creating Natasha from Giant Little Ones gave me a sense of renewal. It was an intensive reminder of why I chose acting for a livelihood. That experience was very healing for me. Through working with our director Keith Behrman, and his wisdom and guidance, I was able to come to terms with baggage I had been carrying around for years I wasn’t even conscious of.

GLITTER: How do you use your voice for change?
TAYLOR: I encourage other actors to know their rights. When you’re feeling uncomfortable in a situation, even under a lot of pressure, you can say no if you feel unsafe in any way. I’m a big advocate for safety on set and in the workplace. In high pace environments, it can be easy to overlook the gravity of the repercussions of avoiding protocol.

GLITTER: Best advice you were ever given?
TAYLOR: Remember those you pass on the way up, they are the same ones you see on the way down.

GLITTER: Who is your mentor?
TAYLOR: There are so many people in this world I admire and idolize. I would first have to say, my mother. She is authentically selfless and patient with me even when I least deserve it. She works harder than anyone I know and lives her life for others. She is the only person I’ve met who I’m sure was born to be a mother. She listens thoroughly and loves unconditionally. She has many traits and practices I’d like to adopt and see within myself.

GLITTER: Who are you are looking forward to working with next?
TAYLOR: This is far more of a wish than a fact, but I would adore working with Tim Burton.

TAYLOR: Treating yourself with kindness and patience. Take time every day to be present with your breath, and pay close attention to your body and mind. Forgive yourself for your hard moments.

GLITTER: What would be a dream role for you?
TAYLOR: A dream role is something that genuinely moves me. A script that allows me to be creative and collaborative with the artists working around me, where we all deeply connect with the story and its themes. Profound, groundbreaking content as a vessel to convey a message to audiences that need it.

TAYLOR: I’m playing around with some music I’ve written and produced! I hope to keep creating. It’s mostly just an outlet for myself, but I might release it one day!
