The annual BET Awards, which honor the hottest artists in Black music, entertainment, sports, and philanthropy, will be broadcasting their 2020 extravaganza on Sunday June 28th at 8 PM (EST). The BET Awards deliver daring and dauntless entertainment every year, and the 2020 awards are sure to be no exception to this phenomenal track record.

Of course, the 2020 BET Awards will be making a few exceptions in comparison to their past shows. Due to COVID 19, this year’s broadcast will be premiering virtually. Moreover, the 2020 Awards mark not one, but two BET landmarks; this year’s celebration marks Black Entertainment Television’s 40th anniversary as a television network, as well as the 20th anniversary of the award ceremony itself.
The BET network has been a pioneering force in Black entertainment since it was founded by Robert L. Johnson in 1980. Though the network initially aired African American music videos and comedy specials in two-hour blocks, it eventually evolved into a major 24-hour broadcaster boasting a diverse array of content, including politics, news programs, sports features, and more.
BET plays a major role in the social, cultural, and artistic representation of the African American community. The annual BET Awards are a culmination of the network’s legacy. As emphasized by network president Scott Mills: “Our community, and the many millions who love Black culture, look to the BET Awards for signature moments of enrichment, entertainment, and empowerment.”
